Travelling actively this winter

Winter is here, but that doesn’t mean that you need to curb your travel habits. With a little planning and preparation, you can still enjoy sustainable and active travel options this winter.

If you’re lucky enough to live within walking or cycling distance of where you’re headed, or are required to walk or cycle for part of your journey – i.e. to the bus stop or train station – there are some key things which will help make your journey more enjoyable!

Even if you are a confident cyclist or walker, winter commuting can be a bit more challenging. Starting with one day a week or keeping an eye on the forecast to check the best days for a more active journey will make your commute more enjoyable.

  • Take extra precaution when walking in winter, wear sturdy shoes, warm and bright clothing and stay on footpaths.

  • When cycling, check your bike before setting out on your journey, allow for more time and be seen - use bright lights, reflectors and wear bright (and warm) clothing to keep yourself safe!
